 The average family consisted of a father, mother, and several children. The  family unit was important to Americans, who ate meals together, went on  outings together, and did other things together as a family. 

 The United States was the world's strongest military power and its economy was booming. Americans bought new cars, suburban houses, and other consumer goods. 

 The 1950s saw the rise of new styles, such as mid-century modern design. Young Americans had more disposable income and enjoyed popular culture, including rock and roll music, movies, and television.
